I need some suggestions for the title. About a month ago, I went around my apartment photographing some of the things that my ex-girlfriend left behind after she dumped me. I'm interested in how those physical things can act as psychological detritus that lingers on and haunts me. I'm thinking "What She Left Behind," "All That Is Left of Four Years," or "Ghosts." Ideas?
I believe that the show opens Halloween weekend. I'm looking forward to the conversations I'll have with the other show participants. I imagine that the exhibition will be cathartic for a lot of folks. Putting our rejections on display and then discussing them will hopefully lead to a purging of any negative feelings.

Maybe simply, "Left Behind" ? I like the photograph. Much more personal/subjective than your other work.
I would go with "What she left behind". It is more obvious, but I like it because it sounds more intentional, which I feel is the point of both this work and the exhibition, right?
I cant wait to see it!
Bill, I almost always do my own assembly to save on cost. Usually I buy my wood frames assembled but I put in the glass, spacers, backing myself. I am thinking about getting the tools to rip and join my own wood frames. I see you are using a metal frame for this one, do you feel that it fits this work better? Metal always feels... disposable?
Hi Lily and Nate,
I think "Left Behind" is the winner. I like the multiple references: the shirt was literally left behind, she left me behind, and then there's the ghosts and memories that were also left behind.
I agree that this work is more personal. I've always tried to make my work personal, but it's tough to do so when photographing in such public spaces. These pictures are a real change of pace for me.
Nate: of course you do your own framing! You are Mr. DIY! Ha. I went with the metal because I needed to get the work framed in a hurry. But I do like the idea of disposable...it certainly fits with the overall theme of the image.
I don't like "left behind".
It reminds me of those popular christian apocalyptic stories that came out 10 years ago.
I like the idea of remnants from the past continually intruding on our present. I have many emotional ties to objects that connect me with past relationships.
Oh yeah! I forgot about those books.
Back to the drawing board then.
What about something ghost related like personal ghosts, her ghost or something like that. Oh, what about Afterimage? Angela
Oh, Foster Collective is hanging the show this weekend, but the reception is not until 11/6.
Hey Angela,
I like both "Afterimage" and "Personal Ghosts." I'll have to give it some thought.
When I dropped my work off with Loren she told me that the opening was next weekend. I'm really looking forward to it! Especially looking forward to hearing everyone's rejection stories and the process for selecting a piece for the Counter-Rejection show.
I personally like "Left Behind", but then I wasn't familiar with the aforementioned christian apocalyptic stories. I also think "Afterimage" is a a catchy title that also fits the content of the work.
As for the framing debate, I've been doing my own framing for a while (using metal sectional frames) and have come to the conclusion that they are disposable. I've had to replace several in the last few months as the enamel finish keeps getting scratched. No matter how careful I am with them, with all of the shipping I do, they just don't seem to hold up. Is it just me or have you had this problem with the metal? Thinking of building my own out of wood that I could at least sand down and repaint as needed...
Hi Bethany!
Thanks for the comments. I finally landed on "ghosts," but thanks for your insights.
Are you getting metal frames from American Frame? Or are you using the Nielsen frame kits? I haven't had any problems with stuff from American Frame. But then again, I never ship anything. It's not worth it to me to pay the costs of packing and shipping. Especially when I live in Chicago. I was in a two-person show with Matt Nighswander in Bloomington, IN last Summer. I just drove everything down even though it's four hours away.
